Oxford Reference Premium Service
Oxford Reference Premium from Oxford University Press gives you access to a vast range of subject specific Encyclopaedias, Dictionaries, Thesauruses, 12,000 illustrations and 500 full-colour maps and flags.

Visuword – Online graphical dictionary
This is a fantastic way to find words and associated terms and concepts displayed in colourful interconnected web.  This is a great way to expand on search terms when searching information databases or search engines.

General reference

Intute is a free online service providing you with a database of hand selected Web resources for education and research. Search or browse the database for specific subject resources which have been selected, evaluated and described by subject specialists.

Issues Online
This website provides online access to the popular “Issues” books, which cover social topics including ageing, consumerism, crime & disorder, education, gender issues, homelessness, lone-parent families, the media, population growth, etc… Useful statistics are also presented in graph format.

Critical Thinking Study centre
A very good support site for AS critical thinking with puzzles, articles, debates and past papers.

Web directories

The Internet Library
One of the best one-stop-shops on the internet for reference. It is basically a huge organised collection of internet links on all subjects, including dictionaries, alamanacs etc. It is US-based but still very useful. Use the list of subject areas on the left.

Yahoo! Directory of Websites
This directory lists websites in categories, e.g. ‘Social Science’, ‘News & Media’, etc. This is the UK version of the Yahoo Directory, so when you get to a list of websites, the British ones are highlighted with a flag.

This American-based internet directory uses a system of human ‘About Guides’, i.e. people who select the best websites for their specialised subject. Use the list of subject areas on the left.

Google Directory: United Kingdom
This link goes to the UK section of the Google directory, so all the websites you find from here will be British. Just choose from the categories at the bottom. (Note that when you get a list of websites, you may need to scroll down the page to see it.)

Search Engines

Enter your question or calculation,  and Wolfram|Alpha uses its built-in algorithms  and a growing collection of data to compute the answer. This has been billed as a Google killer!

Google Scholar
This new Google service provides a quick and easy way of locating academic articles on the internet. You will be able to access the full-text of some articles, but only the abstracts of others. Just type in the author’s name and some words from the article title.

Search for webpages, images.  Also includes a range of additional tools including Google docs for online collaborative writing and the ability to customise your Google page.

Dogpile searches across the content of Google, Livesearch, and Ask.


ProQuest News Platform                                                                                           ProQuest News Platform provides access to an archive of twelve years of UK and international newspaper and magazine articles [See your student email for logon details for MyAthens or pick up a leaflet from the LRC].

The LRC has produced a user guide for this resource. Paper copies are available from the LRC reference desk.

BBC News
The BBC News website is an excellent source of authoritative news on many national and international topics. In the ‘World’ section you can choose to see detailed news from one region, e.g. the Middle East or Africa. There are also inividual sections for Politics, Business, Health, Science, etc.

Guardian Unlimited
The Guardian site gives full access to most news articles, and offers useful categories at the top. You can search for articles, and also search the Archive (see small link on the left) for articles dating back to 1998.

Times Online
The Times website allows you to read articles from the last 7 days in full, and search the content of these. However, the Archive of older content is only available to paying subscribers. There are useful categories on the left.

This is the website of The Independent broadsheet newspaper. Use the categories on the left to see news & features in the subject area of your choice (e.g. Business, Sport …) You can also search the entire content, and read the full-text of all articles online.

Financial Times
This site provides access to a range of FT articles from the past 28 days. This material is very useful for advanced business and economics students.

The Daily Mirror’s website is a typical tabloid newspaper site. It gives you access to the full-text of articles, and is searchable.

Daily Mail Online
This more serious-looking site provides full-text articles back to 2000, and is searchable.

The Sun Online
Online version of the most popular tabloid newspaper in the UK.

UK Legislation

UK legislation                                                                                                                        The Office of Public Sector Information (OPSI) has a broad remit to advise on and regulate the operation of the re-use of public sector information. This page gives links to full-text versions of all Acts of Parliament since 1988. You can search for an Act by typing its name into the Search box at the top.

Official Statistics

Home Office
The Research Development and Statistics (RDS) website contains links to a broad range of freely available data and research dealing with crime, policing, justice, immigration, drugs and race equality.

The Eurostats website contains detailed statistical information on the member states of the European Union inclusive of the UK.

United Nations Statistics Division
Collates and disseminates global statistics on a huge range of indicators including healthcare, education, economy and the environment.

National Statistics Online (Statbase)
The website of the office of National Statistics offering a range of statistical information relating to Britain’s economy, population and society at national and local level. Summaries and detailed data releases are published free of charge.

Human and Civil Rights

Moving Here
The vision of Moving Here is to explore, record and illustrate why people came to England over the last 200 years, and what their experiences were and continue to be. The site mainly looks at the Caribbean, Irish, Jewish and South Asian communities. This web site offers free access, for personal and educational use, to online versions of original material related to migration, including photographs, personal papers, government documents, maps and art objects, as well as a collection of sound recordings and video clips.
